Positive Thinking for Parents Program

The Positive Thinking for Parents Program is specifically designed for parents of pre-school children with serious behavioral problems.  However, all parents of preschool aged children will benefit from the program due to its focus on improving parenting skills, using age-appropriate techniques, and developing children’s decision making capacities.

Serious behavioral, emotional, and social problems may include:

  • frequent uncontrolled tantrums
  • willful hurting of others
  • open defiance, difficulty in expressing emotions or feelings
  • self harm
  • fire starting
  • cruelty to animals
  • depression
  • trouble or inability in making friends
  • failure to receive comfort from parents and/or other caregivers
  • lack of trust of others

The Positive Thinking for Parents Program consists of six, two hour weekly sessions.  During the first half hour, staff and the group facilitators share a family meal with participants.  Childcare is provided while parents participate in an interactive group learning session.  Weekly topics include:

  1. The Brain of a 3 or 4 year old and Age Appropriate Parenting
  2. Love, Bonding, Trust, and Empathy
  3. Taking Care of Yourself in Parenting
  4. Sharing Control with the Child
  5. Improving Decision-Making
  6. Helping Children Make Socially Appropriate Decisions
