The Positive Thinking for Parents Program is specifically designed for parents of pre-school children with serious behavioral problems. However, all parents of preschool aged children will benefit from the program due to its focus on improving parenting skills, using age-appropriate techniques, and developing children’s decision making capacities.
Serious behavioral, emotional, and social problems may include:
- frequent uncontrolled tantrums
- willful hurting of others
- open defiance, difficulty in expressing emotions or feelings
- self harm
- fire starting
- cruelty to animals
- depression
- trouble or inability in making friends
- failure to receive comfort from parents and/or other caregivers
- lack of trust of others
The Positive Thinking for Parents Program consists of six, two hour weekly sessions. During the first half hour, staff and the group facilitators share a family meal with participants. Childcare is provided while parents participate in an interactive group learning session. Weekly topics include:
- The Brain of a 3 or 4 year old and Age Appropriate Parenting
- Love, Bonding, Trust, and Empathy
- Taking Care of Yourself in Parenting
- Sharing Control with the Child
- Improving Decision-Making
- Helping Children Make Socially Appropriate Decisions
